The Prayer of Elijah
Technical Considerations
This entire movement is a lightly accompanied solo for the euphonium or horn. The player stands in front of the ensemble in the traditional soloist position. The range is wide.
The euphonium solo part has several occurrences of Bb4 (a seventh above middle C), and climaxing at the end on the high C (C5, an octave above middle C).
The horn solo part is, of course, a fifth higher, climaxing on the written high G (G5, an octave and a fifth above middle C).
Two alto saxes (band version) or two trombones (orchestra version) are in the two rear corners of the hall, echoing some of the euphonium soloist's lines.
4-8 Extras performers are needed in this and the last movement to twirl the
"whirlies"
(whistling tubes)
Band version: the synth keyboard part is quite easy (only one note held through most of the movement).
The percussion play only a slow quarter-note triplet figure on mallet instruments in the last measure.
