The Fire of the Living God (1995, revised 2004) 9 minutes (8 minutes with
optional cut)
The last of three movements from ...and they gathered on Mount Carmel, a surround-sound musical depiction of the great confrontation between the Old Testament prophet Elijah and the false prophets of Baal recorded in I Kings 18. The audience is surrounded by musicians. Massive blocks of rhythmically active sound are juxtaposed against each other. This piece consistently draws a very strong, positive reaction from the audience and performers alike. Because of this, most conductors have programmed this as their closing work.
